Acnexus Reviewed, Honestly!
After my August voting poll Acnexus was the most popular choice for review so I did some research and testing. Other than finding a number of false reviews and fake rankings sites (I think I will have to write an article on this epidemic), the results themselves were interesting.
Product: Acnexus
Source: http://www.acnexus.com
Firstly, it is a cream treatment that you apply to your skin twice daily the same way you would use a scrub – apply to clean skin, rub for 30 seconds, rinse off, and pat dry. Now in terms of effectiveness, I have to say I was impressed with the feeling it gives the skin after use. Your skin feels fresher and smoother, but not dry at all. Plus the feeling does last longer than other scrubs I have used, and it reduces oiliness for a period of time. It will open your pores like a scrub, and it will moisturize and heal your skin like a natural healing cream, but this will do both simultaneously. So, if you can afford the price of around $20-30 per month, I would recommend this product as a scrub/cream. Personally, though, I will stick to using an over-the-counter scrub and follow it with a natural moisturizer simply because it is 1/3 the price and I like having them separate, but if you like the idea of getting both actions in the same product then Acnexus is a very good option. It will definitely help treat acne, but let me be perfectly clear: it is not a cure! It will simply help, like any other scrub and healing cream would.
Now I have to say that the photo on the website is definitely NOT life-sized. The bottle is actually quite small and it would have been nice to state it clearly somewhere before people buy it. The website does state that the bottle is only 9oz on their FAQ page, but they say “scroll down for actual size photo” and there is no photo on that page so they need to fix that, quickly. In addition, half-way down that page the website owner/sales person clearly makes a “mistake” in saying they send you a “15 ounce bottle” and uses the same price that we are asked to pay for the 9 ounce bottle. Where can we buy that one from?
The acnexus.com website also has a few spelling and grammatical errors. They have a sales website, not a blog, and this shows that they wrote and posted the site quickly and didn’t bother to review their text. If you want to sell something, look professional; if you are trying to look professional, learn to compile proper sentences – and then learn to type them. This is more an issue that just bugs me rather than an indication of the product’s effectiveness.
That aside, it is definitely a bonus that the ingredients actually ARE all natural, unlike some other products that claim to be but aren’t. So bonus marks for living up to that statement. But to be honest, I think some of the ingredients were simply added to the list to make it look good. I mean if all of the ingredients have “antiseptic” or “acne healing” properties, then wouldn’t it be easier to use one ingredient for each task? And if you are trying to have ALL of the natural ingredients that treat acne, how can you skip tea tree oil? Just a thought, but we’ll move on.
The creators of this product have done research into herbal medicine, so you will find that most of their ingredients have a history of being used as natural remedies for skin issues or infections, or simply for maintaining healthier skin. Taking this into account, there are a few main ingredients that will do the most work in treating your acne:
- Walnut Shell Grit:
This ingredient will do the majority (if not all) of the exfoliating. Walnut Shell has been found to be one of the best natural exfoliators in the world and is used in a few hundred different natural face and body scrubs.
- Avocado:
If you haven’t read any of my other posts, I do sometimes talk highly of avocado. Perhaps because I personally love it, but also because it is an excellent skin treatment in general. Most home remedies and facial masques have avocado in them precisely for this reason; it hydrates and moisturizes the skin while also having a small level of healing properties.
- Organic Aloe Vera Gel:
It heals. Everyone knows that. The Acnexus site talks about the aloe plant and give a bit of a history on it, but we all know this already, and they said it best on their site: “nothing natural heals acne better than aloe.”
- Plant Oils:
I didn’t want to get specific because Acnexus has extracted oils from a number of plants. The site talks about healing and aromatic properties, but other than making the product smell better these will only really help to keep your skin moisturized for a longer period of time.
In saying that, there are also a few ingredients that I have issues with, and not just for Acnexus:
- White Willow Bark:
White willow bark has been used as far back as the 5th century B.C. for it’s medicinal effect. The active chemical in white willow bark is salicin, which is similar to aspirin and, when ingested, is metabolized into salicylic acid. This chemical was used for thousands of years primarily to treat pain. Now if we forget about the fact that this will do as much for acne as aspirin would if consumed, it will probably do close to nothing when applied externally to the skin. And yet, we still see claims on the internet that it helps clear acne. Apparently, salicylic acid is meant to dry dead skin cells and promote the peeling of these from the dermis, but if you are using a scrub anyway, then what is the point? As for Acnexus, if salicylic acid is meant to do this, and salicylic acid is created when salicin is ingested, why are we applying raw white willow bark to the skin?
- Vitamin E Oil:
If you want vitamin E oil, take vitamin E supplements. Yes it helps treat acne but better that your body digest it and use it everywhere (including the skin) then to apply it to the skin synthetically.
Now if we get back to it’s effectiveness in treating acne, the main factor when considering this treatment is that it is applied externally. Yes it will open pores, yes it will clean your skin, and yes it will reduce oiliness, but it is extremely limited in its ability to treat acne. It does nothing to prevent the causes of acne in the body, and as such can only be a post-breakout treatment, rather than a prevention.
For best results, use this with at least some sort of internal treatment. For example, take vitamin A supplements or combine this with a healthy diet. Remember, there is no single one-for-all acne treatment available that will clear up everyone’s skin instantly. The best way to get rid of acne is to attack it on all fronts. Acnexus is a good enough product to be worth what you pay for it but, in my opinion, it will only show visible results for people with mild acne if used on its own. For the rest of us, you can use it simply for what it is – a scrub, moisturizer, and healing cream.

From what I understand, this treatment doesn’t take into account the gender difference. I’ve been digging up a lot of information about the differences in gender related to acne.
Many differences in the skins of males and females have cause adverse effects when taking treatment because the major treatments don’t account for them.

This site that I found outlines some of the major differences in the skins of males and females.

Hmm I’ve tried this product before about 1-2 years ago, for about 2 months and quite frankly it didn’t do squat for me. It made my skin feel oily, event after i just washed my face with it. So it basically made my skin even oiler than it was before. If you have occasional break outs to mild acne, then this probably might work for you. However, if you have very oily skin, large pores, and daily break outs, then I suggest you try something else.

Has anyone heard of a new acne treatment called CTRL??
I heard about this one from one of my friends. So, I looked it up and on their website, they say that it’s gender specific. There’s actually one treatment for guys and another one for girls.
There are some other promising things…paraben free, fragrance free, it uses salicylic acid (not benzoyl) etc.
Wondering if anyone’s tried it.

I have been using Acnexus for about a month now. When I first starting using it I noticed it is very gritty, and has a different smell to it, I guess because it is natural. I have to say I love the way it makes my skin feel. It feels so soft, and smooth, and my blackheads are not as noticeable; however, it isn’t really clearing up my pimples. I guess it just makes your face feel clean and soft, but doesn’t really solve the whole problem with acne. I guess I just feel a lil frustrated, because I have sensitive skin, and I can’t use Proactive, and SkinId from Neutrogena, due to them containing benzoyl peroxide. Can someone please tell me what is a good acne product for acne, and blackheads on the nose?

Kim says:
So if white willow bark is similar to aspirin, is it safe to use while pregnant?
December 11th, 2008 at 4:28 am
Erin says:
Kim,
No, you shouldn’t wash your face with Acnexus if you are pregnant. White Willow bark is similar to aspirin, and shows signs of birth defects in children. Anything applied to the skin absorbs, and flows throgh the blood stream and to the fetus while pregnant. With that being said you should also stay away from any antibiotics for acne while pregnant. So if you plan or are pregnant I suggest you should use acne treatment from over the counter. I personaly like St.Ives and Noxzema. My mother used Noxzema since I was a little girl, and it works, and not bad in price. Hope this helps! But, it is always good to talk to your docor about medicines, and products you are using if and when you are pregnant.

I have been using vitamin E oil on my face, beause
I get really dry sometimes.
I never knew that it could help prevent breakouts, but I have noticed that I don’t break out as much ( if not at all )
when I use it.
I was wondering though, what the best natural product I could use to help clear scabs would be.

I bought Acnexus for my son who had really bad acne. I tried it also because it stated it was good for wrinkles. It did not help my son’s acne and does anything really help wrinkles? I must say though I do like how it makes my skin feel. It also controls my oily face more thany anything else I have tried. It turns out my son had cystic acne and it took Acutane to get rid of it. I have bought several bottles and I am getting ready to order more.

Kim says:
I’ve been searching for a synthetic-chemical free face wash for a while. I decided to try Acenxus, because it is mostly natural. It DOES make my skin feel really smooth. And “oily”. It’s full of oils, but don’t let this scare you. Oils aren’t bad for your skin. Your skin naturally produces oils, and this is important for its health. The oils don’t make your skin shiny, nor do they make any foundation cakey. I have really sensitive and also oil-prone skin. If I use anything with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, it gets dry, irritated, and I’ve had mild chemical burns. This provokes more oil production by my skin in a desperate attempt to protect itself. THAT is gross looking. No matter how much (or how little) powder I put on throughout the day, I look disgusting. My point is that acnexus doesn’t dry out my skin. It leaves it feeling fresh, soft, and oily but more in a healthy way.
But it doesn’t clean. I noticed blackheads appearing all over my nose almost right after using it. So I bought a generic face cleanser that didn’t have salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide in it. (Kroger brand foaming facial cleanser.) For me, this works better than anything else I’ve tried, but I still break out, and it’s full of synthetic chemicals. I use Acnexus in the morning to refresh my skin. At night, I use the face cleanser followed by Acnexus. Then, I use diluted glycerin on my face to moisturize.
This process leaves my face clean, refreshed, moisturized, and as break-out free as I think I’m gonna get.
I’m not going to buy Acnexus again. You can buy all natural scrubs (that don’t falsely claim to clean) for about $5, and they seem to work as well as Acnexus. It does make my skin feel nice though, so I will use the rest of my bottle.

Kim says:
Kim and Erin,
I don’t know specifically about white willow bark, but not everything is absorbed into the blood by the skin. And not everything that is in the blood can cross the placental barrier. Just about anything that can cross the blood brain barrier, however, can cross the placental barrier. So IF white willow bark is absorbed through the skin and IF it is converted into acetylsalicylic acid (the ingredient in aspirin), you should not use it because aspirin does cross both the blood brain barrier and the placental barrier. But ask your doctor first. Just because something is similar in structure does NOT mean that it is similar in function OR in general chemical characteristics.

Why don’t you all quit wasting your time with these 20/month creams that do nothing for your acne. Try this product. It’s called Benzaclin and I got it from my dermatologist. It works overnight!! I used it right before prom and I’m totally hooked!!

Hi guys. I tried this for about 4 months, and like most things that I try it worked really well for the first couple of weeks and then my acne slowly started coming back. I kept with it just hoping that it would kick in again, but it never did…plus it started smelling really bad (like it was getting rotten!)
It was pretty expensive for just a 2 week fix. I wouldn’t recommend it. Plus, like others have mentioned, their website is really shady…I should have been weary from the beginning, but I was desperate!

Wrinkling in the skin is caused by habitual facial expressions, sun damage, poor hydration, aging, smoking, and various other factors. The best for preventing wrinkles is drinking a lot of water. Then use a quality cream as this.
