Proactiv Solution Review
It would be unreasonable to speak about acne treatments without discussing Proactiv Solution. It is without a doubt the most widespread and most commonly used acne treatment on the market today. However, with all the marketing, referrals and sales pitches found in a search there aren’t many sufficiently informative reviews available on the product. So I have decided to remedy this…
Product: Proactiv Solution
Source: http://www.proactiv.com
Let’s start with the formalities: Proactiv Solution was developed by dermatologists in the early 1990s and released as an acne treatment in 1995. The treatment kit is comprised of 3 separate solutions; a cleanser, a toner, and a repairing lotion.
The cleanser is used to clean the skin from dirt, oils, and bacteria. The toner is used to maintain this level of cleanliness and to continue to prevent the build-up of sebum and bacteria for a prolonged period of time. The repairing lotion is as it sounds; it is used to repair skin damaged by blemishes or acne scars.
Proactiv Solution has generally had a somewhat positive result against light acne for the majority of people that have used it, including me. For severe sufferers, it will sometimes reduce the severity and frequency of breakouts, although in most cases it will not clear your acne completely. For mild or light sufferers who are not against the use of non-natural products or cosmetics, Proactiv is probably a good choice of treatment.
I want to emphasize my use of the word “non-natural”. There are other treatments available that are all natural and will show similar effectiveness, though these are less known and usually either unpleasant or more expensive. If you are looking for a holistic acne treatment, Proactiv is not the product for you.
In general, the cleanser works much like an exfoliator in that it clears away the dirt, oil and dead cells on the skin surface. It is fairly effective in doing this and your skin usually feels quite small after a wash with this cleanser, but in my experience a generic face wash specifically designed as an exfoliant is usually more effective and less expensive.
The toner is applied after the skin is washed and is allowed to dry. The purpose of the toner is to apply a layer of benzoyl peroxide to the skin to continue the actions of the cleanser for a longer period of time. It works to keep pores unclogged and to prevent the secretion of excess sebum (keeping the skin oil-free). In doing this, however, you will usually find that unless you apply the toner moderately you skin will dry excessively. If applied too liberally, you will usually see white flakes/powder appear on the skin as the benzoyl peroxide continues to work in excess. For these reasons, it is important that you apply only the amount specified in the instructions, which is usually less than you think that you should apply.
NOTE: If applied properly, ANY toner in general can assist in making your skin appear healthier and more radiant.
I have found the repairing lotion to be the most beneficial solution of the Proactiv System. Perhaps there is a more effective combination of ingredients or maybe it is because it is a cream rather than a liquid, but the repairing lotion is quite effective in minimizing the inflammation of a pimple and healing the damaged skin after a breakout. You can usually see an improvement after a day or 2 of using the lotion.
I have always promoted the use of all natural products but the repairing lotion is still the most effective commonly available treatment in healing the skin after breakouts and minimizing acne scars. You can purchase the repairing lotion on its own through external sources but if you are going to do that you may as well purchase the system because the cleanser and toner are still effective products and even if you do not purchase Proactiv you should still use products similar to this (exfoliator/toner) regardless of the brand.
THE ACTIVE INGREDIENT:
The active ingredient in Proactiv, as in many other acne treatment creams, is benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide was first developed by a Revlon scientist in the 1920s to treat acne and is used in concentrations of 2.5 – 10 %. This chemical is absorbed by the skin and a chemical reaction occurs creating free radicals. It works by reducing the amount of sebum released and causing the skin surface to become excessively dry, although a tolerance is usually built after 1-2 weeks of use.
I would like to mention now that if your acne is caused by dry skin, you should probably avoid this product as you will more likely be negatively effected. This is because for some people a burning, itching or irritating sensation occurs. If you try this product and your skin has an adverse reaction you should stop treatment immediately and seek medical/dermatological assistance.
That being said, the benzoyl peroxide concentration in Proactiv is only 2.5%. Research has shown that this concentration is far better tolerated.
This substance will generally reduce the severity of your acne while it is in use but once the benzoyl peroxide ‘wears off’ you will notice an influx of blemishes. This effect is much like that of antibiotic medication. If used frequently your body becomes accustomed to it and processes within the body are altered to match this input. However, once treatment is stopped your body is again forced to change processes and this usually leads to an inverse effect. With benzoyl peroxide, this is because the sebum creation is slowed and acid is forced to build up within the skin rather than being discharged and once the benzoyl peroxide wears off a larger amount of sebum is then produced and needs to be released.
In addition, benzoyl peroxide is used to dye hair and has been found to bleach the colour in clothing it comes into contact with. Always be careful what you are wearing and what you touch after applying a Proactiv product, and always wash you hands thoroughly after application to avoid damaging your clothes – as you may or may not know, bleached clothes cannot be repaired.
All up, despite the cautions, the Proactiv System is an effective treatment for acne only for those with mild acne, and sometimes in worse cases. The drying of the skin is an issue for those with already dry skin and for those who apply the system too liberally. Other than that, and the fact it is not a natural treatment, you should usually see an improvement after using this product, even it is just a small one.

I purchased the 30 day trial, which cost $25.90. Little did I know that I was also purchasing a club membership that would charge $45 on my credit card in the months to follow.
I read over my emails confirming purchase…none of them mentioned I had also purchased something else.
I went back to the web site and checked the page where I added the product to my “cart.” There was no mention of future charges until a few pages into the order process in very tiny letters.
This is deceptive. If anyone who works for Proactiv is reading this, I hoe you will make changes to your site to be more up front about the Club.

Hi Judi,
I have previously purchased Proactiv. I purchased the standard set: 60 days supply for $60ish. The product didn’t work for me unfortunately but they didn’t charge me a membership club and they’re not supposed to. I suggest you give them a call and demand them to refund that amount into your credit card.

Dear Judi.
Wow, that was really bad, I just hope that the product at least worked for you. You should definitely demand a refund for the membershjp fee they charged you. It sounds like it is already a scam and someone or somebody should do about this. Is there a regulating body that oversees these kinds of scam in the internet? Where should this be reported to for proper actions so that others may not be likewise victimized.

proactiv simply didn’t work for me… it didn’t make a difference in my skin but i’ve known people where it worked wonders for them. i guess it really depends on the person and the reason for their acne.

Proactiv also didn’t work for me, but i think it was because my skin was overly sensitive to the benzoyl peroxide and got really irritated and made my breakouts worse. Additionally, i also did the $30 trial offer, and randomly got charged an additional $45 for the membership.

I purchased ProActiv also…it didn’t help heal my acne…all it really did was dry my skin out. I have super Sensitive, Dry, Oily, Rough skin…you name it…I have it! So most things will not help me and I know this but I’m not going to give up trying to find the right product :o) Everyone has different skins….some products works and some won’t.
I think sometimes the infomercials make it seem like this or that person had a ton of acne and just by using their product….it Zapped their acne away in a matter of weeks! But really…I think those people who they show, probably have mild or very mild acne and they only stretched the story out further than it really is just to make it sound more promising that their product is the Best.
Boy, would it be a miracle if someone would just come out with a product that worked for us! Then, I would be able to tell my story of how I found this wonderful product that actually works! :o)

Dr.Julian Billimora says:
Proactive has a very dark side to it.
As long as you can afford to fork out $60+ every month or so, then by all means give this product a try.
However a warning; the second you cease treatment with this product the your previous acne will indisputably hit back with a vengeance. I have seen it happen all too many times where someones acne has cleared to a certain extent under the influence of proactive, yet the minute they miss a treatment the acne comes back and the breakouts are almost double as bad as what they were before the treatment commenced.
So again if you are willing to pay for proactive for about 5-10 years depending on your age; which at $60 every month for 5 years would cost around $3600, then yes give it a try.
But my personal advice working as a dermatologist for 3 years would be Roaccutane.
This is an orally induced form of medication and works at eliminating your acne for good.
I have prescribed this more than 15 times in the course of 3 years and every time it has worked wonders.
I MUST WARN YOU HOWEVER;
Roaccutane is a very effective product when used PROPERLY. The course must be followed adequately or its effects will be diminutive.
Also, there is a price for clear skin when taking this product. It works by drying out your skin; in this time you will find your lips dry up and peel, your skin will grow flakey; and in some cases people suffer from depression and anxiety. Yet the severity of these side effects are reliant on the individual of course.
Before considering this product it is wise to check your cholesterol levels and ask a doctor whether or not you are physically fit enough to handle such a treatment.
The benefit of Roaccutane is that once your treatment is over, if the acne has successfully cleared, it will never come back!
Of course there may be an exception to the rule if you cease to maintain your face and allow dirt to clog your pores etc. Whilst on roaccutane it is useful to use a mild face wash or oil free moisturizer in order to maintain a reasonable complexion.
Cosmetic products may work to a certain extent in removing your acne but let me stress that they only work on a TEMPORARY basis, and require lump sums of money in order to maintain a mediocre face, which for many people is simply not feasible.
Like I said roaccutane will only be prescribed in SEVERE cases and yes if you are only suffering from mild acne then talking daily steps such as facial cleansing and maintaining a healthy diet with LOTS of water can certainly help lessen the acne on your face.
If you have any questions I will be happy to answer them, just remember that not alot of Dermo’s will give away this information for free so use it while you can.
Cheers.

Ryan Liao says:
Dr. Julian that was a very vivid comment. Yes roaccutane REALLY works, but it comes with many scary side effects.
Regarding proactiv, I’m not a supporter for it. My opinion is that the treatment itself is not strong enough. And it is more like a “DEPENDENT” treatment (like what Dr.Julian) has explained.
Water is definitely a good treatment for acne. What’s more, its FREE. Very few people knows that water can actually help a lot in long term acne treatment.

Just spend your money on Acne Free. It is available everywhere for $20 a set, and it is literally an exact clone of Proactiv. Thought everyone already knew that..
You’re forking out $40 extra for the name brand.

I just finished my 3rd week of Proactiv and it is horrible. I bought the 2 month supply and I’m in the process of cancelling the subscription (which I did not actually sign up for) and returning the products for a refund (which does not include shipping and handling, and also probably not the extra $10 I paid in some crap about CA sales taxes that was not in the original cost). Within days of starting to use this product, my face broke out in huge pimples that were just mounds and did not get smaller or become poppable so I could make them smaller. If you search for a website about infomertial scams and look up Proactiv, most people have had horrible experiences with it. I would not wish this product on my worst enemy. I have stopped using the product but it’s left its mark on me and I am miserable because I don’t know how to get rid of the large bumps it has left behind.

Proactiv doesn’t work. I watch the commericals and i see these great sucess stories and i think thats going to be me but within a week, your face drys up and gets flakey and gross. Then a couple weeks later you here NEW proactiv so you order it but it’s just the same thing. Suprisingly i’ve been using clean and clear and my face has clearned up and i can use it night and day, no dryness. so there you go. Plus has you seen lindsay lohan if proactiv really work, she wouldn’t have thoses breakouts.

Amanda: The exact same thing happened to me 2years ago. I used it for 6 weeks and broke out heaps. I stopped, and tried it again and still broke it. It was soo bad I was really depressed and wanted to cry. It was also during the time i had interviews as i had just finished studying.
I’ve tried out heaps and heaps of different types of products. Try using Shiseido or Aesop.

Proactiv didn’t work for me either. It made my skin extremely dry and irritated. I tried it for about a month and gave up. Seeing those commercials makes me want to give it another try. They really are persuasive! But I know better. If it didn’t work for me a year ago then it isn’t going to work for me now. I still haven’t found a product I can depend on. Any ideas?

I was surprised to see all of the negative comments about Proactiv. I started using it when I was in my early 40’s and I am now 52. It is the only thing that has ever worked for me! I tried all types of other topical creams, including prescriptions, and all they did was burn my face off and then the acne would return. I used 10% benzyol peroxide which never worked and so was amazed that the 2.5% solution in the Proactiv formula worked. The products were much gentler to my skin and I did not experience redness, irritation or over-drying. The toner always gives my skin a nice glow and has never caused me irritation like other oily skin toners have. I do not have to use it twice a day anymore, but on occasion I do still get a few outbreaks. Everyone’s skin is different I guess! What works for one may not work for another.

Hey guys
I’m a proactiv user and it worked pretty good for about a month except my skin is just sooo tight and EXCEPTIONALLY dry. Like, EXTREME, guys. Then I ended up breaking out in places like my cheeks, which I’ve never gotten before… I dont know what to do…

Hey guys its me again,
I returned proactiv and found some stuff that really works for me, and i noticed the results a day after. for all you people who found proactiv didnt work, i suggest nutragena extra light moisturizer (shopper’s drug mart, about $20), vichy acne spot treatment (4% salycylic acid) and nutragena oil-free acne scrub. IT’S GREAT. any pharmacy has it.
Maybe since proactiv didnt work for me, and didn’t work for some of you guys, this could work for you since it worked for me.

I have also been on Proactiv for a few months now but my skin is drying out like crazy. I found it worked at the beginning but not so much anymore.
I do not suffer from severe acne but I do have mild acne.
Thanks

I have used Pro-active on and off for 7 years when I started in 2000-2002 it was fantastic it cleared up all my skin problems (balckheads/whiteheads/cystic acne) and kept it away without drying out my skin. I had a baby and as soon as I had had him I restarted it 20003- to now. Since then it has been a nightmare. I am wondering at this point over that grace of time did they change the formula that they were using. I am glad that I am not the only one that it stopped working for.
I am thinking about buying some zyporex does any one have any personal experience with that?
